Alcohol-Based Binders
Ethyl Silicate Binders for Investment Casting
Ethyl silicate binders have long been used in the investment casting industry for the production of ceramic shell molds. These alcohol-based binder systems are known for their ability to achieve rapid shell formation through an ammoniation process, where increasing the pH accelerates gelation and significantly reduces drying time between coats.
Due to their fast curing characteristics, ethyl silicate binders remain a preferred option for certain foundry applications that require rapid shell building and specific process performance characteristics.
Key Characteristics
- Alcohol-based ceramic shell binder system
- Rapid gelation through ammoniation and pH adjustment
- Reduced drying time between dip coats
- Suitable for producing high-strength ceramic shells
- Proven performance across a wide range of investment casting applications
- Widely used in traditional shell-building processes
Transitioning to Water-Based Binder Systems
As environmental regulations and sustainability requirements continue to evolve, many foundries are transitioning from alcohol-based binders to water-based colloidal silica systems to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, improve workplace safety, and enhance process consistency.
To support this transition, Peneq offers advanced REMASOL® Colloidal Silica Binder Systems, providing a modern alternative that delivers excellent shell strength, improved process control, and reduced environmental impact.

Prehydrolyzed Ethyl Silicate (PES)
Peneq supplies prehydrolyzed ethyl silicate (PES) binders that are ready to use for both ceramic shell and solid investment casting molds. Available in three silica concentrations to suit different casting requirements:
- R18 PES – 18% silica content
- R20 PES – 20% silica content
- R25 PES – 25% silica content
These ready-to-use binders provide consistent performance and reliable shell production for a wide range of investment casting applications.
SILESTER® A-1 Hybrid Ethyl Silicate Binder
SILESTER® A-1 is a proprietary prehydrolyzed hybrid ethyl silicate binder designed for both ceramic shell and solid investment casting molds. Its ready-to-use formulation delivers excellent mold strength, outstanding slurry stability, and reliable performance across a wide range of foundry operating conditions.
WACKER SILICATE TES 40 WN
WACKER SILICATE TES 40 WN is a blend of tetraethyl orthosilicate and ethyl polysilicates, used as a high-quality silica source for precision investment casting. After hydrolysis, it serves as an effective binder for both ceramic shell and solid mold casting processes, and is also widely used in the formulation of inorganic zinc-rich protective coatings.
